The Birmingham road where over 4,000 drivers caught by average speed cameras
Drivers in Birmingham have been warned - the busy city road where most people are caught by average speed cameras has been named. Around 4,000 vehicles were captured speeding along the Lee Bank Middleway and Belgrave Middleway last year, exclusive data has shown. It makes them the city roads where most drivers are spotted speeding by average cameras.
They operate in both directions between Haden Circus Roundabout and Five Ways Island. And the figures, released under freedom of information laws, should serve as a warning to motorists that the cameras are working and catching those breaking the speed limit. A total of 4,020 vehicles were recorded speeding in 2024, up to November.
That works out to around 84 every week on average. READ MORE: The new faces added to West Midlands' most wanted list as detectives appeal for help[1] Don't miss the biggest and breaking stories by signing up to the BirminghamLive newsletter here[2]
The busy roads cover a large stretch between Haden Circus Roundabout and Five Ways Island and are used by thousands of motorists every day. Another hotspot location for average speed cameras is the A4540 New John Street West. Cameras operate in both directions of the busy route between the Aston Expressway and Lucas Circus.
Another 3,598 vehicles were captured speeding here, around 75 every week. These are the two locations in Birmingham where drivers are caught breaking the speed limit most often. It comes after we reported how cameras on the Black Country New Road, near Bilston, recorded over 5,700 speeding motorists during the same period.
Average speed cameras were rolled out in a number of areas of concern across the Black Country and Birmingham[3] over the last few years and police chiefs are keen to add more to deter speeders and make the roads safer.
Details were revealed following a freedom of information request to West Midlands Police[4] about locations where speed cameras catch most motorists in the region.
