Fastest speed hit in a Cambridgeshire 30mph zone revealed
Using data from January 2023 to August 2024, the fastest speed recorded by Cambridgeshire Police on a 30mph road in the county was 91mph - which is more than triple the speed limit. The highest speed recorded in a 20mph zone in the county by the force was 50mph, which again, is nearly triple the limit. A spokesperson for the RAC said that it was "disturbing" that some motorists are prepared to drive at more than double and triple the speed limit on roads that are used by pedestrians and cyclists.
Government data shows that speeding is the biggest factor reported in fatal road collisions - 58 per cent of fatal crashes involve a speeding vehicle. In 2021, Asim Bashir, a man from London, was driving on the A47 near Wittering when he overtook an Audi, a Range Rover and a lorry at high speed. When he passed the lorry he hit a Ford Fiesta head on which was being driven in the opposite direction by Christopher Hunt, from Uppingham.
The Ford Fiesta went airborne, through a tree line, down an embankment and burst into flames, killing Mr Hunt.
Casualty reduction officer at Cambridgeshire Police, Nick Southern, has warned drivers of the consequences of speeding.
"Pedestrians will likely step out because they won't anticipate a vehicle travelling that fast. If they do step out, the driver will not be able to stop in time. "Given the time of year where the roads are also slippery means stopping distances are more than what they are during the warmer months.
"The impact speeds to a pedestrian if hit by a vehicle travelling at around 40mph is equivalent to falling out of an eight story building, with extremely low survival odds. "If this occurs, the driver could face a Death by Dangerous Charge, which may result in a custodial sentence." Have you been impacted by speeding?
