An HGV driver who died in a horror crash on the M6[1] was out of his truck as it had broken down, police have said. It happened on the southbound stretch of the motorway, between junction 16 near Crewe and 15 for Stoke-on-Trent, last night (Thursday).

The lorry driver was declared dead at the scene by emergency services who were called at around 9:55pm. Further details about the tragedy have now been released by Staffordshire Police.

They said the crash involved a Toyota Avensis and a white MAN truck.

The truck driver was out at the time as it had broken down, the force said, and he suffered fatal injuries.

His family are currently being supported by specialist officers. The driver of the Toyota was taken to hospital with leg and facial injuries. His injuries are not believed to be life changing or life-threatening.

Police have now issued an appeal for information. "We are keen to speak to anyone who was travelling in the area with any information or dashcam footage which could help collision investigators," they said.

Anyone who may be able to help is asked to call Staffs Police on 101, or using the Live Chat service on their website[2], quoting incident 783 of 27 February.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said earlier: "On arrival crews found two men.

The first patient, the driver of the lorry, was found in a critical condition and sadly, it quickly became apparent nothing could be done to save him, and he was confirmed deceased at the scene.

"The second patient, the driver of the car, was treated for potentially serious injuries before being conveyed under blue lights and sirens to Royal Stoke University Hospital."

The motorway remains closed[3] whilst the police investigation into the crash continues, and is likely to be closed 'throughout the day.'

A spokesperson for Highways England said: "The M6 in Staffordshire remains closed southbound between J16 near Crewe and J15 near Stoke-on-Trent due following a serious collision that occurred overnight.

"This is a protracted police closure and the carriageway will remain closed throughout the day for ongoing investigation work at the scene.

Please be aware that there are severe delays of up to 90 minutes on the approach to the closure at J16 with approximately 5 miles of congestion back to J17 for Sandbach."

A diversion is in place to take motorists off the M6 between junctions 16 and 15.

The A500 near Stoke is likely to be busy this morning as a result.
