M23 closes after huge multi-vehicle crash involving cars and a lorry as traffic at standstill
A major motorway has been forced to close following a multi-vehicle crash between three cars and lorry. A huge multi-vehicle crash in Surrey on the M23 has caused heavy congestion and standstill traffic as emergency services arrived at the scene on Wednesday morning. Drivers heading towards Gatwick Airport were being warned of delays following the incident.
The crash happened between junction J9, Gatwick, and J10, Crawley, and has forced a section of the road to be blocked off leaving motorists stuck.

National Highways South-East said: "M23 south between J9 GatwickAirport & J10 Crawley following a multi-vehicle collision. "Surrey Police[1], Surrey Fire & Rescue service and South East Coast Ambulance are all working at scene, Traffic Officers assisting with traffic management Diversion via 'Hollow Diamond.'" Police have urged motorists to use the M23 southbound at junction 9 onto the Gatwick Spur to avoid the backlog. Sussex Police[2] said: "The M23 is closed southbound between junction 9 and 10, in the Pound Hill, Crawley, area this morning while emergency services deal with a collision.
"The road is expected to remain closed for some time, and motorists are asked to please avoid the area if possible."
