A lorry driver has tragically died in a crash on the M6 motorway.

Emergency services were called out to a collision on the southbound carriageway between junctions 16 and 15, near Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire[1], at 9.55pm on Thursday night (February 27).

Paramedics found two men injured in the collision. One man, a lorry driver, was critically injured from the crash.

He sadly died as a result of his injuries. A second man, who was driving a car, was rushed to hospital for treatment.

West Midlands Ambulance Service says it sent an ambulance, a paramedic officer, a BASICS emergency doctor, a MERIT trauma doctor with a critical care paramedic and the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car from Cosford to the scene.

A service spokesperson said: "On arrival crews found two men.

The first patient, the driver of the lorry, was found in a critical condition and sadly, it quickly became apparent nothing could be done to save him, and he was confirmed deceased at the scene.

"The second patient, the driver of the car, was treated for potentially serious injuries before being conveyed under blue lights and sirens to Royal Stoke University Hospital."

The M6 was closed in both directions as emergency services responded to the collision on Thursday night.

The northbound carriageway reopened by 12.20am on Friday morning.

National Highways says the southbound carriageway is expected to remain closed for the rest of the day.
