Man fatally struck after exiting car on motorway

A 71-year-old man has died on the M20 motorway in Kent after he was hit by a van.

The crash happened coastbound between junction eight at Maidstone and junction nine at Ashford at about 22:20 GMT on Friday.

A blue Kia Carens had stopped on the hard shoulder, the driver exited and was struck by an Iveco box van, police said.

The man was declared dead at the scene.

A female passenger in the car suffered minor injuries.

Kent Police said the driver of the van was assisting officers with their inquires.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
