New ‘smart’ AI speed cameras catch out thousands of drivers
Over 2,500 drivers have been caught by new 'smart' AI speed cameras in their inaugural year of operation on West Midlands roads. These state-of-the-art digital cameras, equipped with the latest technology and artificial intelligence to snare speeding motorists, were deployed at notorious hotspots towards the end of 2023. A total of 2,628 drivers were caught flouting the speed limit from the beginning of 2024 to February 2025, averaging around 45 per week.
The figures were disclosed following a freedom of information request. Staffordshire Police rolled out the cameras in areas where speeding was a significant concern. One camera is stationed on the A449 in Stafford, north of Wolverhampton, while the others are located in Stoke-on-Trent.

A total of 327 speeding offences were recorded on the A449 Wolverhampton Road in Stafford. The busiest camera is situated on the A34 Newcastle Road in Stoke[3], where it clocked 1,616 vehicles exceeding the speed limit. Drivers caught by these cameras may have been hit with fines or penalty points, or required to attend educational courses, reports Birmingham Live[4].
These cameras, boasting superior capabilities compared to traditional devices, are armed with cutting-edge technology to help detect speeding vehicles.
Staffordshire Police are employing a radar gadget to precisely clock the velocity of passing vehicles, sending top-notch images of any speed demons straight to enforcement officers.
Before the high-tech equipment hit the roads, Inspector Mark Joynson from the Roads Policing Unit, shared: "The installation of the new technology will make it easier to check speeds across Staffordshire and we hope they will provide a visual reminder of the work we do every day to keep all road users as safe as possible."
