Serious crash that closed M5 for hours involved pedestrian, lorry and car

Investigations will continue today into a serious M5 crash[1] that closed the motorway for hours in the West Country. The collision happened between junction 24 for Bridgwater and junction 25 for Taunton in Somerset at around 3pm on Wednesday (February 26) and involved a pedestrian, a car and a lorry. It closed the northbound carriageway for three hours and the southbound carriageway for over six hours.

The M5 reopened fully at around 9.30pm. Information regarding the condition of the pedestrian involved in the collision is yet to be released. Nor has any information been released about the condition of the drivers or any passengers travelling in the car and lorry that were involved.

There was lengthy investigation work undertaken on the motorway following the crash. Avon and Somerset Police are appealing for anyone with dashcam footage or information to come forward. Traffic and travel monitoring service Inrix reported: "Severe delays due to recovery work, emergency repairs and earlier accident, a car, a lorry and a pedestrian involved from J24 A38 Taunton Road (Bridgwater South) to J25 A358 (Taunton).

"Congestion to before J23 (Bridgwater North) and its heavy along the A38 between Taunton and Bridgwater as traffic heads away."

Avon and Somerset police said: "If you were travelling in the area at the time and have any dashcam footage or information which could help our investigation, please call 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5225050845."
