Shocking figures show speed cameras which caught the most motorists
Shocking figures show the scale and amount of speeding motorists caught across Somerset over the last year. Figures obtained by BristolLive[1] via a Freedom of Information request have revealed the motorway speed cameras[2] which have issued the most tickets. During that period, the highest speed recorded in the Avon and Somerset Police[3] area was 137mph, the force said.
The area where the most drivers were caught was a stretch of the M4, where nearly 14,000 drivers were caught. The figures show the speed camera located on the M4's eastbound carriageway between Junction 20 and 19 caught the highest number of drivers speeding in 2024, detecting 13,812 drivers. Sections of the M5 between Junction 16 and 17 saw more than 10,000 drivers caught, while nearly 3,000 were caught on the A303 Ilminster bypass, as BristolLive[4] reports.
Here are the speed cameras in the Avon and Somerset Police force area that caught the highest number of drivers speeding:
1. M4 J20-J19 = 13,812
2. M32 = 11,481
3. M5 J16-J17 = 6,371
4. M5 J17-J16 = 4,243
5. B3122 St John's Lane = 4,211
6. M4 J19-J20 = 3,598
7. A303 Ilminster bypass = 2,685
8. M5 J26-J27 = 2,452
9. Lansdown Ln = 2,308
10. M5 J16-J15 = 2,007
The figures also revealed South Gloucestershire[5] was the area in the region where the highest number of drivers were caught speeding in the 12-month period (44,131), followed by Bristol (28,363) and then North Somerset[6] (8,895).
