Car in fatal Leicestershire M1 crash may have been involved in separate collision

A Volkswagen involved in a fatal collision on Leicestershire's M1[1] may have been involved in another crash prior to the incident, police enquiries have suggested. The crash prompted the full closure of the M1 for several hours at the weekend. The fatal incident, which involved a Volkswagen Golf and a Leyland DAF HGV, happened at 4.40am on Sunday (March 16) on the southbound carriageway near junction 22.

Officers said that the VW driver sustained fatal injuries[2] and was pronounced dead at the scene, while the HGV driver was taken to hospital as a precaution but has since been discharged. Now, police investigations into the fatal incident suggest the Golf had been involved in a separate collision prior to its crash with the HGV. In a statement issued today (Wednesday, March 19), officers said the car was reported to be stationary in lane one of the M1 prior to the collision with the Leyland HGV.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident. The fatal crash left both carriageways of the M1 closed as emergency services responded at the scene, while the northbound carriageway reopened later on Sunday. The queue on the southbound M1 was about two miles long for much of the day as traffic queued to exit the motorway at junction 22 before rejoining at the sliproad.

Anyone with information should call Leicestershire Police on 101, quoting incident 88 of March 16.
