Crash driver dies after being struck by lorry as he crossed A1 near Alnwick in Northumberland
A man who got out of his vehicle after crashing on the A1 in Northumberland died after being struck by a lorry on the opposite carriageway.
Northumbria Police said the man in his 30s was struck by a lorry after leaving his red Volkswagen Golf and crossing the northbound carriageway just south of the Alnwick, A1068 interchange, on Monday (10 March).
It was reported that moments earlier, at about 6:40pm, the vehicle was travelling southbound when it collided with the central reservation.
Emergency services attended but the man, who had suffered serious injuries, died a short time later.
The driver of the lorry remained at the scene to assist with enquiries.
Sergeant Steven Chappell, of Northumbria Police, said: "This is a tragic incident where a man has sadly lost his life.
"Our thoughts are with his family and friends as they begin to mourn the loss of a loved one, and our specially-trained officers will continue to offer support where it is needed."
Northumbria Police are now appealing for any witnesses or anyone who might have dashcam or CCTV footage to contact the force.
Sgt Chappell added: "We're now trying to determine exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the incident.
"If you have any information - no matter how insignificant you think it might be - it could assist in our investigation, so please get in touch."
