Fundraiser raises almost £30k for ‘universally liked’ Cliff Tamou

As reported by the Star, Cliff Tamou died in late February following a collision between a Toyota Avensis and a white MAN Truck HGV on the M6, between junctions 15 and 16 southbound. The driver of the HGV was later identified 58-year-old Cliff, who was out of the HGV as it had broken down and died at the scene. A HGV for the Haydock-based SSO Logistics, Cliff also served as a rugby league referee, coach, and development officer, and was a well-respected figure within the rugby league community. With Cliff settling in the north west after moving from his native New Zealand three decades ago, there has been an outpouring of emotion since his passing, along with countless tributes across the rugby league and wider community.

Ahead of Cliff's funeral, which is set to take place at St Helens Crematorium on Wednesday, March 26, a fundraiser set up to support the family has raised more than GBP27,457. "He was universally liked and well-respected, not only within our team but also throughout the wider community as a dedicated Rugby League referee and coach.

"Cliff leaves behind a loving wife and children. To support his family during this incredibly difficult time, we are raising funds to provide comfort and assistance. Our deepest condolences go out to Cliff's family, friends, and colleagues.

Together, we can show our love and support for those he cherished most."

In connection with the fatal crash, the driver of the Toyota, a 22-year-old man from Dudley, was taken to hospital with leg and facial injuries.

He has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
