HGV crashes into river in Bainbridge

The emergency services are at the scene of a serious collision in Bainbridge this morning.

An HGV has crashed through the bridge and into the River Bain.

Police, fire crews and the ambulance service are at the scene.

The A684 is currently closed while emergency services deal with the incident.

A local resident said the vehicle was an animal feed wagon.

"It has gone straight down the hill, past the garage and through the wall into the river.

"There's no sign of the vehicle braking. It's very serious."

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: "We are currently responding to a serious collision on the A684 in Bainbridge, alongside the fire and ambulance services.

"The road is closed in both directions and diversions are in progress.

"Please expect significant disruption in the area for some time.

"Please avoid the area while emergency services manage the scene.
