LIVE: Motorway closed and several people injured as HGV crashes into SIX vehicles

A stretch of the M60 in Salford remains shut on Friday morning after a lorry crossed the embankment and smashed into six vehicles last night. Emergency services raced to the collision between junction 15, for the M61, and junction 16 for Swinton[1] on Thursday (March 20). The motorway was closed both ways after the crash, with diversions in place.

The M.E.N understands at least five people were left injured, with one casualty rushed to Salford[2] Royal with serious injuries. A number of others were being attended to by paramedics at the scene. Repair work has been ongoing overnight and the anti-clockwise carriageway has now reopened.

However, the clockwise carriageway remains closed, and is expected to cause delays to motorists into the morning. On Thursday night a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "We are responding to a collision on the M60 motorway at junction 15 in Swinton involving an HGV crossing the central reservation, into the opposite lane, before going into the embankment.

Several people have been injured and paramedics are on scene. "We ask motorists avoid this section of the M60 this evening. Your patience is appreciated as emergency services continue to provide medical aid and investigate the incident."
