M4 reopens after fire crews rush to ‘serious’ crash

The motorway was shut in both directions between junction 17 for Chippenham and junction 18 for Bath overnight yesterday Thursday, March 6. Emergency services were called to the motorway at around 7.30pm. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service has said four fire crews rushed to the scene.

In a statement released at around 8.30pm on Thursday, March 6, the police said the road had closed and was likely to remain closed for several hours. The force confirmed that by 6.50am, the road had reopened in both directions. (Image: National Highways)

This morning (March 7) a spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service said: "We were called to the M4 eastbound between J18 and J17 at 7.43pm last night (6 March) following a collision between a van and a car. "Four fire crews attended, one from Chippenham and three from Avon FRS (Yate, Temple Back and Bath). "Firefighters supported emergency service partners with casualty care and scene safety, and our stop was at 10.34pm."

Traffic maps now show traffic is flowing along the stretch of affected road.

The police and ambulance service have both been contacted for further information.
