M6 gridlock as truck smashes into embankment and drivers ‘dodge mud’

Motorists have endured a day of huge delays on the M6 after a truck smashed into an embankment before a 'shedload of mud' shut even more lanes. Now delays remain through South Cheshire and into North Staffordshire as highways officials continue to tussle with incidents slowing up the motorway. This morning had seen the southbound closed between junctions 14 and 13 following reports a lorry had left the carriageway.

While the motorway was able to get partially back open after several hours, officials were forced to shut it again as the 'complex recovery' of the wagon was carried out. While that was going on a truck broke down just before Junction 14 which saw three lanes shut. As the network was dealing with these ongoing problems, further north, but again on the southbound there were reports of a 'shedload of mud'.

That has seen two lanes shut between junctions 17 and 16. National Highways is on the scene and lanes one and two are closed 'due to a spillage'.

M6 blocked as recovery underway

As that is ongoing two lanes remain closed where the truck crashed earlier. That has sparked delays through Stafford as motorists seek alternatives.

West Midlands Ambulance Service[1] say the trucker, a man in his 60s, involved in that crash was taken to hospital. Emergency services were sent to the scene around 3.40am. An ambulance service spokeswoman said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the M6 southbound between junctions 14 and 13 in Stafford.

We sent an ambulance and two paramedic officers to the scene. On arrival crews found a man who they treated for minor injuries before conveying him to New Cross Hospital." A Staffordshire Police[2] spokeswoman added: "We were called to reports of a collision on the M6 southbound between junctions 14 and 13.

A lorry collided with the embankment. The driver, a man in his 60s, suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance. Recovery was arranged for the vehicle."

The shedload, at the time of reporting, has sparked four miles of congestion and delays of 45 minutes.

Further south and the earlier crash has triggered seven miles of congestion and around 50 minutes worth of delays.
