M60 horror crash claims one life as police issue statement
Emergency services were called to the M60[1] at around 7pm to the crash on the M60 anti-clockwise between junction 15 and 16 after police believe a HGV with a white cab and blue trailer lost control and crashed into two vehicles. It then crossed into the opposing carriageway and crashed with a further two vehicles, before coming to rest on the verge The driver of one of the vehicles, a man in his 60s, died as a result of injuries from the collision.
A woman in her 20s suffered serious injuries not believed to be life-threatening, while several other people sustained minor injuries. No arrests have been made. A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police[5] said: "Drivers are advised to check for latest travel updates while planning their journey.
Officers from our Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are now investigating the incident and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward. "This includes anyone who witnessed the collision or has any relevant dashcam footage from around the time of the crash. "Police can be contacted via 101 or our Live Chat service at gmp.police.uk, quoting log number 3043 of 20/03/25.
"Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111." The section of the motorway was shut throughout the night with diversions through Kearsley. The carriageway was fully reopened in the late morning.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At around 7.20pm today (Thursday 20 March), four fire engines from Heywood, Farnworth and Agecroft fire stations attended a crash involving one HGV and six vehicles on the M60 anticlockwise between junctions 16 to 15. "Crews arrived quickly and worked with Highway Control and Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe and close the motorway. "Four people were assessed by colleagues from North West Ambulance Service, and one person is being conveyed to Salford Royal Hospital."
Kearsley councillor Tracey Wilkinson said this morning (March 21): "Please plan your journey carefully and allow extra time for travel.
"Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident."
