M60/M61: Diversions in place after multi-car crash with HGV

The crash involved six cars[1] and has left several people injured. Emergency services were called to the crash on the M60 between junctions 15 and 16.[2] The motorway is shut in both directions were closed with traffic backing up as far as Prestwich.

Emergency services including police,[3] ambulances and fire and rescue services remain on the scene. Traffic piled up after a section of the M60 was closedTraffic piled up after a section of the M60 was closed (Image: Highways England) A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said: "We are responding to a collision on the M60 motorway at junction 15 in Swinton involving an HGV crossing the central reservation, into the opposite lane, before going into the embankment.

"At approximately 7pm this evening (20/03/2025), the HGV crashed into six vehicles. "The M60 is closed clockwise and anticlockwise between junction 15 and 16. "Several people have been injured and paramedics are on scene.

"We ask motorists avoid this section of the M60 this evening. "Your patience is appreciated as emergency services continue to provide medical aid and investigate the incident." Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) were also at the incident, sending four engines to the scene.

A spokesperson for GMFRS said: "At around 7.20pm today (Thursday 20 March), four fire engines from Heywood, Farnworth and Agecroft fire stations attended a crash involving one HGV and six vehicles on the M60 anticlockwise between junctions 16 to 15. "Crews arrived quickly and worked with Highway Control and Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe and close the motorway. "Four people were assessed by colleagues from North West Ambulance Service, and one person is being conveyed to Salford Royal Hospital.

"Firefighters remain in attendance at this time." A spokesperson for National Highways said that the road "is likely to be closed for some time." For the latest on this incident visit our live updates on our website.

Diversion Details

Clockwise traffic is being diverted via the solid diamond diversion symbol on road signs:

  • Exit the M60 clockwise at J15 and join the M61 northbound
  • Exit the M61 at the A666 junction and join the A666 northbound
  • At the Kearsley Interchange roundabout, take the third exit onto the A666 southbound (Bolton Road) and continue on this road to then re-join the M60 clockwise at J16

Anti-clockwise traffic is being diverted via the hollow square symbol on road signs:

  • Exit the M60 anti-clockwise at J16 and turn right at the junction to join the A666 northbound
  • Continue on the A666 Manchester Road/Bolton Road northbound until the Kearsley Interchange roundabout
  • Turn left and continue on the A666(M) and then join the M61 southbound
  • Continue south on the M61 and then merge onto the M60 anti-clockwise to continue onward journey
