At one point, congestion from the incident stretched as far back as J18 (Simister Island), according to National Highways. Further along the motorway a broken-down vehicle caused further 40-minute delays M60 anticlockwise from J11 A57 Liverpool Road (Barton) to J10 B5214 Trafford Boulevard (Trafford Centre). A spokesperson from National Highways said: "At about 7.20am on the a/c M60 at junction 19 we had a Citroen Relay van on fire in the hard shoulder.

"Lane one was closed for safety reasons at the scene. "GMFRS quickly extinguished and our traffic officers from Milnrow attended to manage traffic and arrange recovery from hard shoulder. "No injuries and everything running back past the scene at 8.15am"

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "At around 7.30am this morning (Monday 17 March), three fire engines from Blackley, Phillips Park and Whitefield fire stations were called to a vehicle fire on the M60 anticlockwise between junction 20 and junction 19.

"Crews wearing breathing apparatus arrived quickly and used one hose reel to extinguish the fire.

Crews were in attendance for around an hour before departing the scene."
