Man hit by car while crossing M4 in late night crash

Following reports of a crash, the motorway was shut in both directions between junction 17 for Chippenham and junction 18 for Bath overnight on Thursday, March 6. Emergency services were first called to the motorway near Leigh Delamere at around 7.30pm. Wiltshire Police said a Vauxhall Corsa was reported to be stationary and unlit in a live lane going eastbound.

Shortly after, a Ford transit then crashed with the back of the car, injuring three occupants. Half an hour later, a man police believe was attempting to cross the motorway on foot was hit by a Skoda, in the slip lane to westbound services. The police believe the man had been driving the Vauxhall Corsa.

He remains in hospital with "serious injuries". In a statement released at around 8.30pm on Thursday, March 6, the police said the road had closed and was likely to remain closed for several hours. The fire service and ambulances both sent multiple vehicles to the scene.
