Police chiefs in the West Midlands recently announced more speed camera vans would be hitting the roads to monitor traffic in hotspot areas.

These marked police vans regularly park up at the side of busy roads, as well as streets where there are known to be issues with speeding.

Unlike fixed speed cameras, drivers never know where or when these mobile units will be in place.

It allows police to monitor ordinary traffic conditions, and results in thousands of speeding motorists being caught out every year.

That number will now likely increase after West Midlands Police[2] confirmed its fleet of vans would be doubling from four to eight, allowing them to be in more locations at one time.

It will also allow them to target hotspot issues where they have been complaints about speeding.

The mobile speed cameras visit some roads again and again due to concerns over driving standards.

The hope is speeding tickets will serve as a deterrent to drivers not to take the risk on these roads in the future and stick to the speed limit.

Freedom of information data revealed the roads police visited most often to 'spy' on drivers.

Officers went most often to the B4121 Shenley Lane in Birmingham[3], near Meadowbrook Road.

A total of 1,129 vehicles were recorded speeding.

Another frequently visited spot is Heartlands Parkway near Star City.

Here, 767 offences were recorded.

Police vans also parked up at problem locations across the Black Country.
