Road closed as lorry overturns after hitting bridge

People are being told to avoid the area

A road is closed after a lorry crashed into a bridge. Merseyside Police[1] were called to Golborne Dale Road in Newton-le-Willows[2] in the early hours of Wednesday, March 26.

According to traffic management system Inrix, the incident has been ongoing since around midnight and the lorry hit the railway bridge and overturned.

Merseyside Police[3] shared a picture of the HGV on X and said recovery is in progress. However, officers said the closure will be in place for some time and for people to "avoid the area". It is unclear if there are any injuries.

Inrix states Warrington[4] Road is closed in both directions and recovery work is taking place from from A580 East Lancashire Road (Golborne Island, Golborne) to A572 Newton Road (Golborne Dale).

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "There is a road closure on Golborne Dale Road, Newton-le-Willows due to an overturned HGV.

Recovery is in progress however the closure will be in place for some time so please avoid the area."
