Road reopens nearly 36 hours after lorry smashes into bridge and overturns

A road near Greater Manchester has reopened, nearly 36 hours after a lorry hit a bridge and overturned[1].
The A573 Golborne Dale Road in Newton-le-Willows reopened this morning (March 27) after being inspected by highways officers. It followed a crash at the bridge near to Warrington Road in Golborne which police were called out to at around 11.25pm on Tuesday.
Article continues belowImages from the scene showed the lorry remaining on its side on the road on Wednesday morning with the incident affecting traffic near to the A570 East Lancs Road.
Police taped off a section of the road either side of the bridge while investigation work took place and the scene was cleared.
Merseyside Police then handed the incident over to Network Rail and St Helens Council after confirming it was a 'damage only collision'.
The local authority has now confirmed that the road has reopened. Network Rail has been contacted for comment.
A Merseyside Police spokesperson said on Wednesday (March 26): "We were contacted at 11.25pm last night, Tuesday March 25, following reports an HGV had struck a bridge on Golborne Dale Road in Newton-le-Willows and overturned.
"Work is ongoing to recover the vehicle and road closures remain in place."
