Tragic motorway crash kills hero grandad after he saved his wife’s life

A family has been left devastated after a "heroic" grandfather tragically died in a horrific accident on the M60. David Lalgee, aged 64, was killed in a collision that involved a lorry and four cars close to Swinton on Thursday, March 20. Police believe that the lorry lost control, crashing into two cars before veering into the opposite lane and colliding with two more vehicles.

David was driving one of the cars with his wife, Jo Lalgee, as a passenger. His family said that David, who served as a pastor at Church Alive in Blackpool, saved Jo by swerving to absorb the majority of the impact from the lorry, and shield her from greater injury. David's son-in-law, Reuben Morley, 35, expressed the family's grief on a GoFundMe page set up to support them: "On Thursday (March 20) our hearts were shattered into a thousand pieces as we lost David to a tragic road traffic accident on the M60 motorway."

He continued to honour David's memory, saying, "David was a strong, loving and devoted husband, son, father, grandfather, brother and pastor, and was deeply loved by so many.", reports the Manchester Evening News[1]. Reuben also reflected on David's final act of bravery: "David's last moments on earth were spent how he so often lived, protecting the ones he loved, and because of his heroics on the night, nobody else lost their life." The crash did not claim any other lives, although a woman in her twenties sustained serious injuries which, according to Greater Manchester Police, were not considered life-threatening.

Speaking to MailOnline, the 57-year-old expressed her profound gratitude towards her late husband: "David saved my life.

It was a miracle that I walked away from the accident, he did everything he could to stop the lorry from hitting me. "He sacrificed his life to save mine and I'll be forever grateful to him for that. When we saw the lorry break through the central reservation, David knew exactly what was going to happen."

In the wake of the tragedy, over GBP900 has been raised to help the family through a GoFundMe page.
