Upton B4211 Hanley Road crash: arrest for careless driving

Two people, including the driver, were seriously hurt after the van left the B4211 Hanley Road between Upton and Hanley Castle and hit a tree at about 1.30pm today (Monday). No other vehicle is believed to be involved in the incident as police cars, two ambulances and a fire engine arrived at the scene on blue lights. Both the driver, a man, and the passenger, a woman, were taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital with potentially serious injuries.

Part of the road was closed using traffic cones as officers directed traffic, allowing motorists to pass with care in both directions. "Officers arrived to find a car had collided with a tree. The male driver has been arrested on suspicion of careless driving causing serious injury. The passenger has been taken to hospital with injuries."

A spokesperson for the Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said: "A Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crew from Upton-upon-Severn Fire Station was called at 1.28pm to an RTC on Hanley Road, Upton-upon-Severn. "A car was in collision with a tree and two casualties, who had been released before the arrival of the fire service, were handed over to the care of the ambulance service who attended along with police. The vehicle was made safe by fire service personnel and the incident marked as pending closure at 2.22pm."

The damaged vehicle was removed by a recovery truck. A spokesperson for the West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a van that had crashed into a tree on Hanley Road at 1.14pm. One ambulance attended the scene and on arrival we discovered two patients.

"A man and a woman were both treated for potentially serious injuries before being taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital."
