Woman dies in M5 collision involving lorry in West Country

A woman died after a collision on the M5 involving a pedestrian and a lorry at the weekend in the West Country. Avon and Somerset police said the fatal incident happened in Somerset shortly before 3am on Sunday, March 23. The motorway was shut for more than six hours in both directions while police investigated the collision near Bridgwater.

The southbound route reopened later in the morning but northbound remained closed until mid-afternoon. A statement by Avon and Somerset Police said: "A woman has died after a collision on the M5 near Bridgwater (23 March). The incident, involving a pedestrian and a lorry, was reported at 2.48am on the northbound carriageway between junctions 24 and 23.

"Officers, along with the ambulance and fire services attended, but despite the efforts of emergency services, sadly the woman, aged in her 70s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. "Her next of kin has been informed and will be kept updated by officers. Our thoughts are with them.
