Disqualified Midlands driver jailed after killing ‘beloved’ mum on M40

A Midlands driver who killed a 'beloved' mum on the M40[1] has been jailed. Akashdeep Singh had been disqualified from driving at the time of the crash, with his actions slammed as 'stupid, reckless and selfish.' Singh, 24, was driving a Peugeot Boxer[2] van on the M40[3] on Saturday, September 28, 2024.

Traffic had slowed down as a result of an earlier collision on that stretch of motorway, Warwickshire Police[4] said. But Singh, despite having ample warning, failed to slow down and crashed into the back of a Hyundai Tucson[5] at around 7pm. It forced the Hyundai[6] into the back of a Mercedes[7] van, pushing it out of the way and killing a woman who had been travelling in the Hyundai[8].

Police said the Hyundai[10] driver, a man, was also seriously injured. But Singh decided to flee the scene and, with his van doors jammed shut in the crash, climbed out of the window and fled across a nearby field. Singh had been disqualified from driving just two days before the tragedy happened.

Appeals were shared to find the 24-year-old, who later handed himself into Warwickshire Police[11]. Singh, of Twydale Avenue in Oldbury, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, causing death by driving whilst disqualified, causing serious injury by driving whilst disqualified and causing death by driving while unlicensed or uninsured. He was jailed for seven years and eight months at Warwick Crown Court[12].

DC Sam Bates, from Warwickshire Police[13], said: "It has been harrowing to see the devastation that his irresponsible, selfish actions have caused. A family now has to spend the rest of their lives without a beloved mother, wife and sister. "Fleeing the scene of a collision that he caused made his actions even more appalling.

I hope this serves as a reminder to all that we are each responsible for each others safety on the roads and that stupid, reckless and selfish behaviour has devastating consequences."
