Everything we know so far as A14 closed for more than 21 hours following fatal crash

A major A-road in Cambridgeshire[1] has been closed since 9.30pm yesterday evening (Tuesday, April 23) after a crash involving a car and a lorry which killed one person. The incident happened on the A14[2] Eastbound near Horningsea at around 9.25pm last night. One person died at the scene with two women and one man being taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital[3] with serious injuries.

A 38-year-old man from Cambridge[4], who was driving the lorry, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The man remains in custody and police have launched an appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident or have dashcam footage leading up to the crash to come forward. The Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service was also called to the area.

Firefighters used hose reels to extinguish a vehicle fire and returned to their stations by 11.40pm. Police have been conducting an investigation into the crash at the scene throughout today (Wednesday, April 23). The A14 has been closed in the eastbound direction since last night with the road surface being in poor condition after the incident.

A spokesperson for National Highways confirmed "the full closure is set to remain in place into the early evening". A diversion has been put in place via the A10[5] to Stretham and back to the A14 at Newmarket[6]. A Cambridgeshire[7] Police spokesperson said: "Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone who saw the vehicles in the moments leading up to the incident.

They would also like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time with dash cam footage." A spokesperson for East of England Ambulance Service said: "Four Ambulances, three Hazardous Area Response Team vehicles, four paramedic cars and East Anglian Air Ambulance were sent to the A14[8] near Cambridge on Tuesday evening, following reports of a serious road traffic collision. Sadly one patient died at the scene.

"Two women and one man with serious injuries were transported by road ambulance to Addenbrookes Hospital[9]." A Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "At 9.25pm on Tuesday crews from Burwell, Cambridge[10] and Newmarket[11] (Suffolk[12]) along with a water carrier were called to a vehicle fire following a road traffic collision involving a HGV and a car on A14 near Stow Cum Quy. "Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters used hose reels to extinguish the fire before returning to their stations by 11.40pm."

The road remains closed with traffic across the whole of Cambrige being affected.

Traffic in and around the city has been facing severe delays throughout the evening rush hour.
