Huge M6 delays after lorry sheds load of gravel covering 300 yards of motorway
There are long delays on the M6 near Birmingham after a lorry shed a load of gravel on the highway. Two out of four lanes of the M6[1] were closed between junction 5 for Castle Bromwich and junction 4A the M42 link road on the southbound carriageway. The lorry shed its load containing gravel which went over the carriageway with approximately 300 yards of the road covered.

National Highways has confirmed that half of the motorway remains closed near the gravel spill on the M6 to allow for workers to safely clear the road.
The incident is said to have started shortly after 8am but some three hours later the road remains clogged as workers clear the gravel. The congestion is now said to stretch back six miles. National Highways: West Midlands said on X: "The #M6[4] southbound between J5 (#CastleBromwich[5]) and J4A (#M42[6]), lanes 1 and 2 (of 4) are closed due to a lorry shed load.
"There is currently approx.
6.5 miles of congestion on approach, causing delays of 45 minutes above usual journey times."
