Injuries in crash on A35 at Morcombelake
The emergency on the A35 in west Dorset led to major traffic disruption as the busy route was closed for almost three hours. The crash happened at Morcombelake sometime before 11am with police, firefighters and paramedics called to the scene. It's understood a number of members of the public helped at the scene before rescuers arrived, and those people were thanked for their efforts.
The fire service said a car and a campervan were involved and a lorry transporting liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was damaged and had to be made safe. Pictures from the scene show one of the vehicles on its side and another in a hedge. (Image: Charmouth Fire Station)The road was closed between the Crown Roundabout at Bridport and the Charmouth/Lyme Regis Roundabout - a distance of more than seven miles - while emergency services worked at the scene and vehicles were recovered.
There were reports of huge tailbacks in surrounding areas as drivers attempted to find other routes. The road finally reopened at 1.50pm. Speaking earlier, Sylvia Frampton at Felicity's Farm shop in Morcombelake, said: "This morning they were queued for ages.
Now they have stopped traffic coming through at Bridport so nothing is coming through here. It was all piled up earlier as the accident was in the middle of the village." A spokesperson for Charmouth Fire Station said: "We were mobilised along with Bridport Fire Station to a two vehicle road traffic collision on the A35 at Morcombelake involving a campervan and a car.
"Three casualties were treated at the scene for minor cuts and bruises and one conveyed to hospital with a more serious medical condition. "Crews performed casualty care until the arrival of South Western Ambulance. "The vehicles were made safe including a damaged LPG tank before handing over the scene to the police for investigation and recovery.
"We wish all those involved a speedy recovery.
Thank you also to the members of public who assisted."
