M27 footage shows the moment lorry’s tyre bursts near Hedge End
Kevin Bentley, 54, from Alresford was driving on the M27 on Monday afternoon towards Bullington Cross before his tyre burst on the motorway in Hedge End[1]. Wanting to avoid an accident with the fast-moving traffic, Kevin - who works for waste-management service Bryan Hurst Recycling - safely brought the vehicle to a stop in the lay-by, uninjured, and managing to avoid any further accident. Speaking to the Echo, the 54-year-old said: "You don't know why these things happen, it could have been anyone.

-- Matt Davey (@MattDaveyJourno) April 22, 2025[3]"I was driving at around 48mph and I felt something go off underneath me. It was a loud bang, and it made me jump, I wasn't too sure what had happened at that stage, but I just wanted to bring the lorry to a stop in the safest possible way.
"Whether I hit something in the road that I didn't see or if it was something I can't explain, I don't know. Ironically when I got into the lay-by it was on a bend and there was a car that had broken down, so I had to move around that. "Fortunately, a recovery vehicle turned up for the car and they were able to radio for another recovery vehicle for me, so I was only there for about 25 minutes."
Back driving on the roads a day later, Kevin added: "I've never had a tyre go like that before but I'm glad I was able to avoid an accident." Christopher Doherty captured the incident on his dash cam footage, with his partner Ashleigh driving the car behind the lorry. Christopher said: "My partner was driving along and there was a loud bang and a cloud of dust.
"The lorry managed to stay in its lane and get to the side of the road safely and didn't swerve at all.
"As we drove past, we saw the front tyre had blown apart.
Absolute credit to the driver that managed to keep it under control."
