The most prolific North Wales speed cameras pinging thousands of drivers a year

There are speed cameras across North Wales - from mobile vans to fixed and average speed cameras. These catch those breaking the limit with the number of drivers caught speeding increasing since the introduction of the 20mph default limit in Wales. In 2023 there were 62,742 drivers caught breaking the speed limit in North Wales.

This went up to 97,088 in 2024. The major increase came on 20mph and 30mph roads - with the new limit coming in on September 17 2023 - and enforcement stepped up in the spring of 2024. There were just over 25,000 speeding offences on 20mph and 30mph roads in 2023.

But this had increased to just under 57,000 in 2024. Figures have also been released under Freedom of Information to show which cameras have been getting the most drivers. One of the most prolific is one of the 20mph cameras in Flintshire[1].

It is sited on the A5104 at Pontybodkin. This is a VECTOR-SR type ultra speed camera which do not require painted lines on the road and use infra-red low-light technology, meaning they no longer 'flash' at speeding drivers. Between January 1 2024 and the end of the March this year the camera recorded 8,991 offences on that stretch.

Perhaps surprisingly that wasn't the highest figure. This went to the average speed cameras on the A494 between Garden City and Deeside Industrial Park.

Those cameras enforce a 50mph limit - which is in place to help reduce roadside pollution. A lot of drivers are being caught out here with a total of 10,148 offences over the same period.

Third on the list is another 20mph location on the A548 at Oakenholt. There were 5,330 offences recorded here. In fourth it is another average speed camera zone.

This is on the A483 between junctions 5 and 6 at Wrexham[2] with a 50mph speed limit aimed at improving air quality.

There were 4,904 offences. The last camera to make the top five was one on the B5129 at Pentre, Flintshire. This is another fixed camera on a 20mph road, which is clearly catching out a lot of drivers, with 4,848 offences.
