Two serious crashes cause traffic gridlock on the M4

Drivers on the M4 faced gridlocked traffic this evening[1], Tuesday, April 22, as traffic was being held at two locations following crashes. The Prince of Wales Bridge was closed following a crash involving a pedestrian and a lorry. Traffic monitoring site[2], Inrix, reported just after 6.15pm: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationery traffic due to accident on M4 Prince of Wales Bridge in both directions, from J22 M49 to J23 M48.

Prior to 18.20, all traffic held to assist with air ambulance." At around the same time, another collision occurred near the Almondsbury Interchange. Inrix reported: "All traffic being temporarily held and queuing traffic due to accident on M4 westbound from J20 M5 J15 (Almondsbury Interchange) to J21 M48."

The Prince of Wales Bridge was closed in both directions from 6.30pm until around 8.30pm, when all closures were lifted. Traffic was diverted via the M48 Severn Bridge during this time. And Gwent Police reported that the crash on the bridge into Wales involved a lorry and a pedestrian, with the female pedestrian taken to hospital to be treated[3].

Traffic on the motorway had returned to normal by around 8.45pm, according to Inrix.
