What we know so far as three taken to hospital following crash between car and HGV in Gateshead

The A692 has been closed since the early hours of this morning due to a collision between a HGV and a car on Watergate Bank. Police have been on the scene since the early hours of the morning and the road remains closed at the time of writing. Three people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The A692 is closed due to a collision between a HGV and a Mini Cooper. Police are on the scene and have been for several hours.

Where is the A692 closed?

The A692 is closed between Alwinton Gardens in Lobley Hill and Pennyfine Road in Sunniside.[1] The closure is around 1.4 miles in total. The crash occurred on a stretch of the road known as Watergate Bank, just before Namaste Restaurant.

How long has the road been closed?

The A692 has been closed since 2.15am on Thursday morning.

It has now been closed over seven hours.

When will the road reopen?

It is not yet clear when the A692 will reopen. Northumbria Police[2] have confirmed that the road remains closed as officers conduct enquiries and the vehicles are removed.

What have emergency services said?

Northumbria Police have issued an appeal for information after three people were taken to hospital following the crash. They said: "Just after 2.15am this morning (Thursday), police received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A692 - known as Watergate Bank - between Lobley Hill and Sunniside, just before Namaste Restaurant. "It was reported that a grey Mini Cooper S has been travelling along the road before colliding head-on with a MAN Articulated lorry which was travelling in the opposite direction.

"Emergency services attended and the driver of both vehicles, and a passenger, were all taken to hospital with serious injuries. They all currently remain in hospital receiving treatment." The force encouraged anyone with information to get in touch, using reference number: NP-20250403-0064.

The North East Ambulance Service[3] confirmed that three emergency ambulance crews attended the scene. Two patients were taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for further treatment and a third was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead[4].
