Truck spills metal shards, damages hundreds of cars in Australia[1]
STORY: :: May 2, 2025:: Central Coast Area, Australia:: A truck spills scrap metal across one of Australia's busiest highways, sparking traffic chaos:: Howard Collins, Coordinator General, Transport for New South Wales"Now we know over 300 vehicles or around about 300 vehicles have been impacted, maybe more by what now we know is over 700 maybe even 750 tonnes, sorry kilograms, 750 kilograms of metal debris from the back of a truck, which has spread this metal debris for over 30 kilometers.""As a result of that, the highway was closed as soon as possible, once we got the right resources there about 6.30 a.m. and the highway is now obviously closed on a significant area.""We are now working because once you clear it other vehicle movement means that some of those shards spill over back onto lane three, so we've changed our tactic, we are now working slowly at very reduced speeds, clearing and moving down.
This is over 30 kilometers of roadway, unprecedented."New South Wales state police said the incident occurred on the M1 Pacific Motorway in the early hours of the morning, leaving over 300 vehicles with tyre damage.Howard Collins, Coordinator/General, Transport for NSW, said it would be "more than several hours" until the motorway could reopen. The M1, a freight and commuter route that runs north of Sydney, remains partially shut as emergency services clear the debris, using magnets and working to "hoover up the highway."
