Air ambulance crew called to Surrey M25 lorry crash as oil, diesel and waste spill on motorway
A person has been rushed to hospital following a series collision on the M25[1], which is likely to leave the motorway closed for a long time The M25 is closed anti-clockwise between J6 Godstone[2] Interchange (East Grinstead, Eastbourne, Caterham[3], Godstone A22; Westerham (A25)) and J5 Chevening Interchange (Maidstone, Channel Tunnel, Dover M26 (M20); Sevenoaks, Hastings A21) This is due to a collision involving two lorries[4].
One of the lorries (a tanker transporting waste) has overturned. This means that a diversion[5] route has been put in place, and traffic caught within the closure has cleared. The incident has also left one person in hospital.
A spokesperson for South East Coast Ambulance service said: "SECAmb was called shortly before 3.50am today (14 May) to reports of an overturned lorry on the M25[6] between junctions 6 and 5. "Ambulance crews attended and were joined at the scene by a team from Air Ambulance Charity Kent, Surrey, Sussex, which attended by road. One patient was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to Kings College Hospital by road."
Accident investigation work is ongoing and there is a spill of oil, diesel and waste on the motorway.
The spillage means that the road closure will likely be extensive, and involve a complex clean up operation, after which the road may need to be resurfaced.
