Drivers left queueing for two hours on the A19 following vehicle fire

The A19 was closed for around two hours on Friday (May 16) evening after a van fire blocked both lanes. Emergency services were called to the A-road between the A689 Wolviston and the A1027 junction, at around 5.05pm, which saw fire engines, police vehicles and paramedics on the scene. During the closure, National Highways reported that '60 minute delays' for drivers were in place on the A19, and that motorists should find alternate routes.

"There are 60-minute delays on the A19 southbound between the A689 Wolviston and A1027 due to a vehicle fire which has blocked the road within the A1027 junction," a National Highways spokesperson said at the time. ADVERTISEMENT Cleveland Police also issued a statement, saying: "Shortly before 5pm on Friday, May 16, police received a call relating to a van on fire at the A19 Billingham Interchange southbound exit slip road.

"Officers, along with the Cleveland Fire Brigade, attended, and a road closure was put in place while firefighters tackled the fire and lane one was closed. It has since been reopened. Recommended reading:

During the closure, firefighters and police were seen working at the A19 to extinguish the fire and move the vehicle involved.

The road reopened at around 7.15pm, with National Highways adding: "All lanes are now open on the A19 southbound within the A1027 junction following a vehicle fire."
