GoSafe issues statement on reports it’s using unmarked mobile speed cameras
There have been discussions on social media forums in recent days after a photo was shared of what was believed to be an unmarked speed camera van in North Wales. People have reported seeing vehicles similar to the one pictured in the Flintshire and Denbighshire area. One commentor said: "There was another one on the A55 just as you come on from the Treborth/Parc Menai slip road.
"Unusual in that it was on the A55 and it had some sort of device on the roof." In the UK, there is no law prohibiting the police from using unmarked vehicles to monitor speeds - and last year Avon and Somerset Police rolled out the use of unmarked mobile speed cameras. However, GoSafe[1], the Road Casualty Reduction Partnership which operates speed cameras in Wales, has said it only deploys marked vehicles.
Inspector Gareth Morgan, head of GoSafe, said: "I can confirm that the attached image is not a GoSafe speed detection vehicle. The mission of GoSafe is to reduce death and serious injury on Welsh Roads to a minimum, by changing driver behaviour.
"As a result, all our detection vehicles are highly visible, and we do not have any plans to acquire or deploy unmarked vehicles."
