M25 lorry crash causes diesel spillage and barrier damage as clean up gets underway
A crash on the M25 involving a lorry has caused a diesel spillage and barrier damage. National Highways told drivers to expect delays of one hour on approach to M25[1] anti-clockwise between junction 10 (Wisley) and junction 9 (Leatherhead[2]). According to traffic monitoring site Inrix, the crash took place at around 6am (May 22), and since, lanes one and two (of four) on the motorway have remained closed.[3]
Workers are currently at the scene of the crash working to clear the diesel spillage, but National Highways has said barrier repairs are also required. For the latest on this incident follow our live blog here[4]. A spokesperson for National Highways said: "Our service providers are currently clearing a diesel spillage caused by the collision.
Barrier repairs are also required. Delays of at least 60 minutes[5] on approach." Not long after this incident, the clockwise section of the motorway also experienced delays and lane closures after it was reported that swans had found themselves on the M25 clockwise between junction 9 (Leatherhead) and junction 10 (Wisley). Two lanes were briefly closed, and the National Highways spokesperson provided an update: "3 lanes (of 4) are now open on the #M25 clockwise between J9 (Leatherhead) and J10 (Wisley).
"Lane 1 is still closed whilst our resources remain in attendance working to clear the animals from the network.
Delays on approach of at least 40 minutes above usual journey times."
