M5 crash LIVE: Chaos on major motorway as rush hour smash leaves traffic standstill

Traffic on the M5 southbound is at a complete standstill after a crash this morning. All traffic is being held between Tewkesbury and Cheltenham on the southbound carriageway, with long tailbacks forming. Roads and traffic monitoring site, Inrix, reported the crash at 6.54am.

It said: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident on M5 Southbound from J9 A46 (Tewkesbury) to J10 A4019 (Cheltenham).All traffic stopped at around 06:50." Lorry also involved in crash

the crash that has lead to rush hour chaos on the M5 involved a van and a lorry, it has been reported.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix said: "Southbound just after J9 Tewkesbury, traffic held due to a collision between a lorry and van. Road currently closed. Long delays, avoid if possible."

Jam caused by van crash

One lane has been closed causing traffic queues on the M5 Southbound after an accident involving a van between J9 (Tewkesbury) and J10 (Cheltenham).

Two lanes have now reopened after traffic was stopped for around 20 minutes.

Lane three remains closed as people await the arrival of recovery teams.

How long is the disruption expected?

The crash happened shortly before 7am and traffic is expected to cause problems for around two hours.

According to traffic monitoring site Inrix, there are lane closures and normal traffic conditions aren't expected to return until between 8.45am and 9am.
