M53 crash live updates as emergency services shut motorway
Traffic has ground to a halt on the M53[1] this morning following a crash. National Highways confirmed the motorway has been closed due to a collision between junction five at Eastham and junction six at Ellesmere Port heading southbound. It confirmed Merseyside Police[2], Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service[3] and North West Ambulance Service are all at the scene, with traffic believed to have been held since 8.35am.
Inrix traffic monitor said: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident on M53 Southbound from J6 (Hooton) to J7 B5132 Netherpool Road (Overpool). Congestion to back past J5 (Eastham) for southbound. The northbound side slows as traffic passes the scene.
"All traffic was held around 08:35am." A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "Emergency services are currently on the M53 junction 6 following a collision this morning, Thursday 8 May. "At around 8.15am, it was reported that a white Peugeot van had been in collision with a red VW car near to the Eastham exit of the M53.
"The M53 Southbound is currently closed from junction 4 and motorists are advised to avoid the area while officers carry out the early stages of an investigation. Information can also be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
