The smash involved a silver Volkswagen Transporter van and another vehicle as yet unknown.

Now police have confirmed that the van driver - a 71-year-old man - has died in hospital after suffering serious injuries. The other vehicle left the scene following the collision on the northbound carriageway and work is ongoing to identify it and the driver. Officers are urging witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Andrew Dennison, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "If you witnessed the incident and have information which may aid us in locating the driver of the other vehicle, I would urge you to get in touch. If you have any information that may help, or you are the driver of the vehicle, please come forward and help us with our enquiries." The man who died has not yet been named but his next of kin have been informed and they are being supported by officers.
