M6 traffic stopped as broken down driver ‘sprayed and arrested’
Police[1] brought traffic on the M6 through Staffordshire to a stop - after a broken down driver 'became aggressive'. Road crime cops and National Highways workers had been called to the stricken vehicle between Junction 13 for Stafford South and junction 14 for Stafford North. However officers claim the motorist 'was drunk' and also 'became aggressive and violent'.
Cops at the scene on the northbound carriageway confirmed how 'incapacitant spray' had to be used. While the matter was unfolding, at around 12.50am this morning, National Highways told drivers that traffic was being held due to a 'police-led incident'. Traffic was subsequently released just before 1.10am.
Staffordshire Police's[2] road crime team have thanked drivers for their patience while waiting for the incident to be resolved. A spokesperson for the team said: "One of our single-crewed patrols went to assist National Highways with a broken down vehicle. Turned out the driver of the broken down car was drunk and became aggressive and violent towards us resulting in incapacitant spray being used.
Other patrols arrived to assist resulting in temporarily all holding of the northbound traffic whilst the driver was restrained and the arrival of a police van to safely take them to custody. Luckily no one was injured. Driver failed to provide in custody.
Thank you to the drivers trapped in our closure for their patience whilst we dealt with this incident."
