Police dog tracked down suspects in overnight incidents
At 12.56am, Police Dog (PD) Kenai and handler PC Scott Gatman were alerted to an incident involving a suspected stolen van from Wetwang across the Humberside Police border. A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: "Roads Policing officers spotted the grey Fiat Ducato heading towards York on the A64 having passed through Aberford. "They pursued it and it came to a stop in Micklefield.
It then rammed the police car before the driver ran from the vehicle. "That's when PC Gatman and PD Kenai were brought in to track to the suspect who was hiding in undergrowth. "He has been handed over to Humberside Police for an investigation into theft of a motor vehicle, various motoring offences, and possession of Class C drugs.
"Then, just after 2am over in Harrogate, the duo were called to an incident involving a blue Kia C'eed estate car that had been in a fail-to-stop collision with a parked panel van near Mayfield Terrace. Road Policing officer got behind the Kia and the driver failed-to-stop again, before the occupants ran from the vehicle. Officers attended an address where the driver was possibly hiding.
They could hear someone jumping over fences at the rear of the property. Waiting nearby, PC Gatman deployed with PD Kenai just after 3am. They tracked the suspect through gardens, eventually locating him where he surrendered on sight of PD Kenai.
The 20-year-old local man, along with an 18-year-old woman who was arrested by officers at 2.20am, have been interviewed and released under investigation for various motoring offences including drink-driving.
All in all, a pretty good night shift for our Dog Unit heroes and the Roads Policing team."
