Police reveal reason for closure of major Leicestershire road
A major Leicestershire[1] road was closed for several hours this morning after a lorry overturned. The A47 was shut while emergency services dealt with the incident. The closure between Billesdon Crossroads B6047 and Wood Lane in Tugby was implemented in the early hours of this morning (Thursday, May 1).
Officers issued an alert to motorists shortly afterward, advising them to avoid the area[2]. In a post on X, Leicestershire Police said: "Traffic update | 03:00 | The A47 is currently closed between the junctions of Billesdon Crossroads B6047 and Wood Lane in Tugby due to an incident. Please find alternative routes and updates will follow."
In a statement issued later on Thursday, a police spokesman[4] said the report of the overturned vehicle was made just before 1.45 am to the force. No life-threatening or life-changing injuries were reported following the incident. Traffic monitoring service, Inrix reports that the road is now open.
The A47[5], also known as Uppingham Road, is a key route connecting Leicester to Peterborough.
