Two people injured in horror A1 lorry crash causing major delays in Northumberland

Two people have been taken to hospital following a serious lorry crash which has shut the A1 in Northumberland[1] for hours. Emergency services were called to the A1 near Causey Park at around 3.40pm on Tuesday to reports of a collision involving a heavy goods vehicle. A number of police vehicles attended the scene, between Morpeth and Alnwick, where a lorry had overturned in the crash involving another two vehicles.

As a result, it had shed its load across the carriageway. Officers swiftly closed the main road in both directions to traffic causing major delays to drivers during the evening rush hour. Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it dispatched three appliances on scene with firefighters working to ensure all the vehicles involved were safe.

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed two people were taken to hospital in Cramlington[2] as a result of the serious collision. A spokeswoman said: "We were called to a road traffic incident at Causey Park in Morpeth on May 6 at 3:41pm.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews and one duty officer to the incident. Two patients were taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital."

Their condition at this time is currently unknown. The A1 has been closed for over three hours at the time of writing with drivers urged to avoid the area. Northumbria Police officers are carrying out further investigations at the scene and a clean-up operation will need to take place before the carriageway can be reopened to traffic.

A Northumbria Police[3] spokesperson said: "Just before 3.45pm today (Tuesday), we received a report of a multi-vehicle collision on the A1 just after Morpeth, near to Causey Park. "Emergency services are currently on scene. "The road is currently closed in both directions and diversions are currently in place.

Drivers are advised to expect delays and seek alternate routes where possible."
