Air ambulance lands at A55 crash which shut carriageway in both directions

An air ambulance was called to a crash that closed the A55[1] in both directions, yesterday evening (Friday). It happened at the Penmeanbach Headland, at around 6.30pm, with motorists urged to avoid the area. A Traffic Wales statement said: "Warning - Collision A55 Eastbound Penmaenbach Headland CLOSED.

Please avoid the area." A later Traffic Wales update, shortly before 6.40pm, said: "The A55 remains closed in both directions between J15 Llanfairfechan and J18 Llandudno[2] Junction. Due to the severity of the incident, the road is expected to remain closed for some time."

The air ambulance flew to the Royal Stoke University Hospital, which has a major incident unit. There were no further details on the crash, but North Wales Police[3] and the Welsh Ambulance Service have been approached for information. Diversions were put in place while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Traffic Wales said the road was fully reopened by 8.10pm. The crash happened the day after a crane lorry fire[4] in the Conwy[5] Tunnel on the A55, caused major disruption. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter[6] sent twice daily to your inbox
