Motorists face a nightmare commute to work after a multi-vehicle crash on one of Sydney's busiest freeways sparked traffic chaos.

Three cars and a truck collided on the M4 eastbound at Minchinbury between Wallgrove Road and the M7 off-ramp shortly before 6am Thursday.

The crash closed two of the three citybound lanes for almost two hours, sparking massive delays with 10km-long traffic queues extending back to Orchard Hills near Penrith.

All citybound lanes have since reopened.

'Traffic remains heavy from The Northern Road, so continue to allow extra travel time as heavy traffic eases,' the latest traffic alert stated.

An injured woman, 65, was taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

The three other drivers involved in the collision were all uninjured.

The Traffic and Highway Patrol Command is investigating the crash.

Anyone with information or footage of the crash is urged to come forward.

The M4 is one of the primary routes linking Sydney[2]'s western suburbs to the city.
