An HGV driver has appeared in court accused of seriously injuring three people by dangerous driving. Alan Reeves was allegedly responsible for a five-vehicle collision on the A1, at Stannington[1], in September 2023.
Eight people were taken to hospital as a result and three suffered significant injuries, prosecutors said. One man suffered multiple broken ribs, internal bleeding from cuts to his liver and spleen and a fractured pelvis, while a second suffered a temporary aneurysm, broken ribs, a broken leg and lost teeth.
A court[2] heard that a third man suffered a tear to his ligaments and a soft tissue injury.
The collision happened on September 18 2023 on the southbound carriageway of the A1, which was subsequently closed for a number of hours while emergency services attended and an investigation was carried out.
Reeves, 44, of Beach View, in Boulmer, in Northumberland[3], was in the dock at South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court to face three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He withheld his pleas to all charges and, instead, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.
Ruth Forster, prosecuting, said the case should be sent to the crown court. She added: "The Crown would say that this is not suitable for summary trial.
The incident took place on the A1 in the early afternoon of September 18 2023.

Stewart Hay, defending, agreed that the case should be sent to the crown court. Magistrates declined jurisdiction and sent Reeves to Newcastle Crown Court.
He was released on unconditional bail to next appear there on July 9.
