M1 near Luton closed after multi-vehicle crash

A northbound section of the M1 in Bedfordshire has been shut following a crash between two cars and two lorries.

National Highways said the road, between junction 11 for Luton and junction 11a for Houghton Regis and Dunstable, was closed at about 12:00 BST.

Bedfordshire Police and other emergency services attended the scene and the force's traffic officers were assisting with traffic management, it said.

Firefighters were also dealing with an unrelated lorry fire which was part of the traffic caught within the closure.

Debris, including oil on two lanes of the road, was being cleared to allow traffic to be released.

National Highways said traffic was being "escorted slowly past the scene on the hard shoulder".

Long delays were being reported in the area and drivers were being advised to exit the motorway[1] at junction 11, follow the hollow triangle diversion symbols and rejoin at junction 12 for Toddington, it added.
